There’s something special about driving through the rolling hills just outside of Lexington and realizing you’re headed toward a place that genuinely feels connected to the roots of bourbon culture. That’s exactly the feeling we had during our recent visit to Bluegrass Distillers at Elkwood Farm — a distillery that somehow balances modern innovation with old-school Kentucky soul.

From the moment we arrived, it was obvious this wasn’t just another stop on the bourbon trail. The scenery alone deserves its own pour. Nestled among the beautiful countryside near Lexington, the historic Elkwood Farm property feels like bourbon country in its purest form — peaceful, intentional, and deeply tied to the land itself.

Founded in 2012, Bluegrass Distillers began with a simple but ambitious mission: create authentic Kentucky bourbon while honoring traditional craftsmanship and embracing innovation. What started as a small operation in Lexington has evolved into a full “ground-to-glass” distillery experience at Elkwood Farm. 

One of the most impressive things about the brand is how intentional they are with every detail. They source locally, grow some of their own corn on-site, and experiment with mash bills and barrel finishes without losing sight of what makes Kentucky bourbon legendary in the first place. Their signature Blue Corn Bourbon, made with non-GMO blue corn grown on the property, is one of the more unique pours we’ve experienced in recent memory. 

And then came the tasting.

We sampled several expressions during our visit, and honestly, there wasn’t a weak pour in the lineup. The wheat selections were rich and balanced. Their toasted oak offerings carried deep layers of spice, caramel, and warmth that lingered beautifully. But the standout moment of the day was undoubtedly the 18-year selection.

That pour had everything bourbon lovers chase after — mature oak without bitterness, deep caramelized sweetness, dark fruit notes, leather, tobacco, and an impossibly smooth finish that seemed to last forever. It was refined without losing character. Powerful without becoming aggressive. The kind of bourbon that makes a table go silent for a second because everyone is trying to process what just happened.

What also stood out to us was the atmosphere. Bluegrass Distillers still feels personal. In a bourbon world increasingly dominated by massive corporate experiences, there’s something refreshing about a place where passion still leads the conversation. You can feel the craftsmanship. You can hear the pride in the storytelling. And you walk away feeling like you discovered something authentic rather than simply visiting a tourist attraction.

The history of bourbon in the Lexington area runs deep, with the region serving as one of the foundational homes of Kentucky distilling culture for generations. Bluegrass Distillers feels like a continuation of that legacy — not by copying the past, but by respecting it while building something entirely their own.
